Brixton Recreation Centre

Fantastic experience: Known locally as the "Rec", Brixton Recreation Centre offers a huge range of activities for all ages, interests and abilities.Having 6 floors from bowling and fencing on the lower ground level , you can wend your way up through the squash courts,children's play zone and further up to level 4 where the huge swimming pool is heavily used by local people, including school groups and swimming club members. As there are 3 pools it enables lane swimming at all times . On the 5th level is the well equipped gym with all the machines and a separate "spin room".The vast sports hall is used for basketball, wheelchair basket ball, badminton, table tennis and woman's roller derby! Dance studios have salsa classes for seniors,pilates, martial arts and other activities. There are 2 football clubs and the pitch is available for group hire as well. On Friday the a mosque is open in the football hall and on Sunday Christian church groups meet upstairs. Sometimes the changing rooms need more attention - keeping toilets up to scratch and with paper. however the staff are almost uniformly helpful and friendly ( even though some customers can be rather rude and impolite!) Now that Lambeth Council have guaranteed that the Rec is secure and will be investing millions into developing the building and activities,I would recommend it for everyone. It's a friendly place where you can meet and get to know people from all corners of the world.The more people who regularly use the Rec ,then the more vibrant it will be. There's also a lively users group (Brixton Recreation User's Group -BRUG- which has a web site and Facebook site. The prices are very competitive ,the facilities excellent. Check it out for yourself.

Fantastic experience: I moved to Brixton because of Brixton Rec. It has one of the best swimming pools in the UK. You can lane swim all day. It has a wonderful wooden ceiling and natural light. My children and I have made lots of friends of all ages, all sorts of different wonderful people from all walks of life. Most of the staff are polite, of course there are exceptions, same goes for the users, but overall I would say my experiences have been very positive.

Fantastic experience: I recently signed up to Brixton rec, but have been swimming there for over a year. i love it the staff are friendly and make sure to keep your kids or siblings safe. There is someone constantly cleaning the changing rooms and its cheap !

Fantastic experience: It's in a very intersting building with a positive fung shui energy. There are wooden ceilings and light comes through the top, it's much better than the other ugly new leisure centre buildings. There is a crech with friendly staff and a play zone area so the place is especially good for kids. Generally the staff are friendly and welcoming (not all) and the atmosphere is great. The center has all the facilities you need plus more.

Fantastic experience: I use it off-peak and the swimming pool is very airy and has plenty of natural light, never particularly crowded (bet even when I found it crowded, people are not as aggressive as in the Queen Mother's swimming pool in Victoria, where swimming is just stressful). The gym has two large separate sections, one with aerobic equipment (steps, cyclettes, treadmills, etc) and one for weights, where all the bulky guys are. while you use the equipment, you face the swimming pool below, which is a lovely view. Spacious throughout, way better than the cramped, stuffy Fitness First round the corner. Staff has always been extremely helpful (they found the gold and diamonds engagement ring I had lost, and phoned me home to let me know it was there waiting for me). DOWNSIDES: The women changing rooms are often cold and drafty, though, and often wet as they serve the pool - but as most people wear shoes, the floors gets dirty fast. Also, there could be more water fountain in the gym, to refill your bottle.

Fantastic experience: There are a lot of clubs and activities for kids and adults. School holidays are always catered for with various activities and there's a gym and pool you can use whilst the kids sto their own class. Location is perfect in the heart of Brixton.

Positive experience: Huge sports centre, very well equipped. The staff was friendly and super helpful. There is a nice atmosphere anywhere in the building. I recommend it!

Fantastic experience: Good And The First Time Since Tuesday The 5th Of October 2021

Positive experience: Water a bit on fresh side in main pool. Could be warmer this time of year!!! Sauna and Steam room made up for coldness in the pool. Site very clean and covid safe. Immaculate steam and sauna area. Staff friendly and helpful. Would've given 5 if pool wasnt so cold.

Fantastic experience: Great yoga classes, running machines facing the pool and a climbing wall that i've been dying to try for a long time. Part of one of the most vibrating sites of Brixton, next to the Pop Brixton(excellent) and to the local markets plus Brixton Village on the way. The gym is highly advisable for every single person that wishes to get fit both physically and mentally

Fantastic experience: I've just had my first swim under the new rules and it was great. Wide lanes and not too crowded. Takes a bit of getting used to with different arrangements in the changing areas. But it's worth the inconvenience to be able to get back in the pool. Brixton is also my favourite pool so thank you GLL for getting it ready. And really nice to see some regular faces around the place and poolside.

Fantastic experience: Super sports centre in the heart of Brixton. Variety of exercise classes, gym equipment, dance studios, meeting rooms, soft play for the kiddies, climbing wall, swimming pools, steam room...variety of sporting classes for kiddies and adults (football, fencing, gymnastics etc) and sport clubs. Birthday parties for the kiddies.

Fantastic experience: Because it's great for my son which is 3years old I took him there swimming and stayed for 4hours he absolutely loved it a every Saturday thing for him now

Fantastic experience: Best play area i have ever been in south london! The soft plays are impressive. Perfect for children from 2 years old, maybe also 1 but with grownups constantly watching. I love it! I also have lots of fun when i go there.

Fantastic experience: Have been going for years...tried other gyms near my office and elsewhere nearby and nowhere near as equipped, spacious or easy to workout in.

Fantastic experience: The facilities are decent. Since my last visit they have fixed the plumbing issues in gents by the pool. I think people need to cut them a little bit of slack. No it's not perfect but taking into consideration the large number of visitors, things are running fine and efforts are being made to maintain the centre. I've visited the centre 6 times now and I've never noticed anything out of the ordinary. I recommend people to visit and don't get put off by some of the bad reviews

Fantastic experience: Huge gym, state-of-the-art equipment, and more machines than you could believe. Never ever have to queue for equipment. It's cheaper than Fitness First down the road, and you also have access to a 25m swimming pool, as well as classes, and a wide range of activities such a badminton, squash, fencing, bouldering and anything else you fancy trying your hand at.

Fantastic experience: This centre is a great place to go to the gym, swim, go to the sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi, or football practice etc There a classes for different sports,karate, badminton,dance,gymnastics,tennis, etc and a soft play area. There is a cafe area and a creche, and sweet machines. Classes are reasonably priced

Fantastic experience: Great! Love it! The floors could be a bit cleaner.... Great amount of showers, lockers, changing rooms! I'd say it's cleaner and BETTER than Clapham Manor's one!

Fantastic experience: Having been to the Clapham Leisure Center, just off Clapham high street and changing to Brixton has made a lot of difference. Brixton Leisure Center has got a positive vibe to it. I always get the free weights, more space and all the machines; even during peak times 6:00pm to 8:00pm, but find it very difficult with Clapham Leisure Center. Love the studio workout sessions. The leisure Center trainers also help you plan your personal goals, whether it's to get leaner or loose body weight.

Fantastic experience: Been using the gym for just over a year..I use both the gym and classes and overall they offer a great service and good value for money. In terms of gym - it's full of modern equipment with an additional gym up stairs, with women only sessions. In terms of classes - this gym has some amazing spin instructors (I've been spinning fit years!!) equally good Body Conditioning, Power Pump & yoga classes. Provides some brilliant classes with very experienced instructors. I don't use the pool so can't comment,
