Shift Personal Training provides personal training in Plymouth (UK) and the surrounding area. We provide the best service tailored specifically for each individuals needs. Our passion is to make your goals a reality.

I am Joe Canning, a personal trainer in Plymouth with an extensive background in helping individuals like you achieve and exceed their fitness goals. I specialise in improving your strength, cardiovascular fitness, power, speed and general fitness while decreasing body fat levels. I’ll also tailor your diet and nutrition to your specific goals. I have also studied and practiced in a variety of specialist areas including sports strength and conditioning and pre/post natal fitness. Whatever your goals, I have the skills to make it happen! Its not enough for you to just ‘feel like you’ve had a good workout’. You deserve actual quantifiable improvement in your fitness and body shape. I take the guess work out of your training and provide measurable results in all aspects of your physique and fitness. Perfect technique equals safer exercise and far better results. Getting into the gym is not enough. Don’t waste another second of you training. Do it right! Whether its resting for an extra 30 seconds between sets, or not getting a full range of motion when you lift weights it’s all too easy to take short cuts and kid yourself that you are getting the most out of your sessions. Having your own personal trainer with years of experience who is focussed on you getting the very most out of every repetition will ensure you achieve the best results possible in the safest way.

Relatively short but intense workouts are the most beneficial for the majority of trainees. However most trainees left to their own devices still persist with long, slow cardio workouts that waste your time and achieve minimal lasting results (not to mention being boring)! Train smart and let me increase the intensity of your workouts for real results!

You book in your session and turn up. I take care of the rest. For many people just getting through the door of the gym amongst a busy work and family schedule is 50% of the battle. As a personal trainer I will keep you accountable and on track to achieving the goals we set at the start of your training. No more excuses. No more reasons not to achieve the body you deserve.

Everyone is different and so are their goals. If you want the best results you need a personal trainer who can tailor training to your individual body type and goals. For example, some people have stubborn fat around their stomach whereas others may struggle more with their hips and thighs. There are reasons why you store fat where you do. I will show you how to tailor your diet and exercise to reduce your body fat and increase muscle strength and tone even in your problem areas!

I can train you in several gyms in and around Plymouth. Some people have a preference for the gym nearest their house or their place of work and I have the flexibility to accommodate this. I offer Plymouth city centre locations, Ivybridge or further afield. I can also train you at home, in local parks or at your sports club. I understand how busy your life can be and I provide training sessions to suit your current work and family commitments. Fantastic experience: I have been training with Joe for over a year now, which is testimony to Joe right there ...I have never stuck with any exercise program for longer than a few months let alone over a year I am a 50-ish year old female who whilst not overweight (though I have lost half a stone without trying) hadn't done much in the way of physical activity since my early 20's. As a result I couldn't do one single push up and could probably have just about wheezed my way once around a running track Joe and I have sorted out a program which suits me rather than being prescribed by some kind of Manual or Online Training Guru. I like a challenge but am easily bored so I have to have a target to keep me going. Its all credit to Joe that he has the patience to 'Adapt' to these new targets without losing sight of the bigger picture .( I can almost hear the 'what now' and see the eye roll) So I have gone from theoretically training for the Marine entrance test (still work in progress) to being able to do press ups (check) pull ups (Check) Muscle ups (WIP) training for a Power lifting competition with the aim of qualifying for the British Championships (nearly there) to being fit enough to enjoy the Tough Mudder I have entered in May Now you may get the idea from this that I am some Bulky Amazon but this is just not the case, yes we do a lot of heavy weights, because that's what I enjoy doing, but there is a world of difference in training for strength and training to bulk up like the bodybuilders do and Joe steers you in the right direction. In fact I am a 5'7'' 9 st 10lb female with long limbs and have NEVER looked or felt better (and that's my Husband talking who has known me since I was 17) This however makes some aspects of power lifting for example challenging but with Joe's encyclopedic knowledge and expertise we have trained to help with these issues. So whatever your goals, shape or size, I am sure Joe has the knowledge and expertise to get you there. He is also very encouraging, easy to get on with, pushes you far further than you would push yourself, but does it with such a lovely smile. (that last bits a lie ....more like an evil grin!!!!) I wouldn't miss my weekly session with Joe for the world, and if I had the wherewithal I would make it 2 or 3 Don't think about it any more just do it....It will probably be the best decision you have made this year

Fantastic experience: As a more mature lady who has never trained before, I wanted someone who could understand my goals and help me reach them without being hardcore and shouty. I've worked with Joe for almost a year now and can honestly say I enjoy the training and the results so far, and I plan to continue so I can be generally stronger and more independent. I can have a laugh with Joe, there's plenty of good conversation but most importantly, I feel I can rely on him to keep me progressing. I have complete trust in his knowledge and working methods, plus he's a generally nice bloke.

Fantastic experience: As someone who has avoided going to the Gym for most of his life I have been astounded at what I have been able to accomplish with Joe. He is extremely supportive and encouraging and has an inventive and varied range of exercises which always kept the workouts interesting. Working with him for the last few months has resulted in far greater results than I thought possible in such a short time.
