Pleasance Sports Complex & Gym

Fantastic experience: The Centre for Sport and Exercise is a five-star gym that beats out the rest on both quality and price. It is not just the new, fantastically-built university gym for Edinburgh University, but it is also a community gym that welcomes members of the public to join as well, for just slightly higher rates. (Roughly £15 per month for students, £25 per month for partners of students or staff, and £30 for community members I believe - which really is a bargain for all groups!) I like that this gym has variety and great quality. The main cardio room has great machines with touch-screen TVs that are easy to navigate and the best and most current gym technology - including free bracelets that let you tap into the exercise machines and keep track of your weekly goals. Behind the main cardio room is a weight room that can be very busy with lots of testosterone monopolizing the weights, but at lunchtimes it is much less busy and intimidating. In the back, with stunning views of Arthur's Seat, is my favorite gym room with great elliptical trainers along the walls and many large individual mats on the floor for using weights, medicine balls, exercise balls, etc. It is much more calm than the other rooms, especially with the natural lighting and great views. I also love the classes, and they have 60 per week to choose from! I regularly go to the spinning, Zumba, and circuits classes and have also tried out Aquafit, step aerobics, and mind and body. They have all been great with really nice and helpful instructors. You book all of the classes online from seven days before the classes, but can also sometimes show up and see if there is extra space to join in. The classes at the CSE are my favourite offerings! This is a fantastic gym and has a great vibe about it. With your membership, you also have access to the pool that's in another building, and you can buy an add-on to your membership giving access to a climbing wall that's pretty cool too. There are also squash and basketball courts that I haven't used, and a boxing training room as well as Olympic training rooms that require special access. Thus far, I have been more than happy with all of the many other offerings in the main building! It's a great gym, and I highly recommend it! I've been a member for two years now and can't speak more highly of it. It's a great gym, and I highly recommend it!

Positive experience: Excellent gym overall, one of the best I’ve been to anywhere, huge, clean and extremely well-equipped (a shame some rooms are closed now for renovations). One weakness is that the signage is really poor, especially for first time (or second, or third-time) visitors. The layout is a maze-like labyrinth of corridors and staircases, it’s very easy to forget how to get to a room or just find it purely by chance. Visible signage with pictograms, rather than just long lists of room names which mean nothing to a new user, would be more helpful. The signage which does exist also isn’t in places you would want it, like under a doorway or hanging from the ceiling, when you turn a corner, or at the staircase you are thinking of going down or climbing so you stop, perplexed, because you don’t know where it will lead you to. Red is not the best colour for signs if it's also the main colour of walls inside the gym. A map might even be handy. I know this isn’t an airport, but it would make the place more user-friendly.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been going here for 3 years (almost every day out of lockdown for the last year) and I’m not exaggerating when I say I think it’s the best gym in the UK. I’m moving away from Edinburgh soon and I will miss this place terribly. AMAZING equipment range/access and facilities, is split up over lots of different rooms so is less intimidating and you can really focus on what you’re doing. Lots of bathrooms (including gender neutral) and friendly staff on hand. They do challenges every month or so so there’s a real gym community feel. Because there’s a lot of students it’s generally a comfortable and progressive atmosphere and I absolutely love it. Also have been really really considerate and on the ball with upping hygiene standards since Covid. I love you Pleasance!

Fantastic experience: One of the best gyms I have ever trained in. The equipment is absolutely stellar, especially if you train Olympic weightlifting. They have so much practically new Eleiko equipment. Honestly almost anything you would ever need

Fantastic experience: I enjoyed my time at The Gym :) however, the space there is quite small and there is only one room in which you have all the machines (weights,cardio etc). Good price for what you get (could improve the machines though, some of them look quite used..).

Fantastic experience: One of the best gyms of the country. It has a LOT of machines and even when it is full, one can still find a spot to do one's own exercises. The gym also offers Squash courts for rent as well as an array of equipment. Also has a nice climbing venue and a fairly decent multi-purpose hall. The classes are also really nice and the bathrooms are always clean.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities and lots of sports clubs, although most are only available to Edinburgh University students. Membership available to all, just not the sports clubs and the gym facilities are fantastic. Parking can be difficult and it is by permit only in the car park, but there is plenty of metered parking nearby!

Fantastic experience: I understand from talking to a lot of other people in Edinburgh, that this is the best equipped gym in the whole city. Very good value for money as well. Can get a bit busy at times, but usually there isn't much of a wait for equipment. You never have to wait for the cardio equipment, but the free weights and machines are usually quite busy.
