After an what seems like an eternity at home in lockdown followed by the endless summer holidays, settling back into the normal school or nursery routine in September can’t come soon enough for some parents. As we see baby steps towards socialisation, you’re probably also on the hunt for term-time classes. It probably feels like you are “back to square one.” Weighing up the best activities available and placing your trust in a provider has never been as important decision as it is now.

As schools prepare to reopen, many parents are looking for clubs and classes for the next year. As a parent you will often ask: “What’s the most beneficial activity for my child?”, whether it be an after-school club or a daytime class. And, quite right to ask! It’s a more important question than many parents realise. The following are the ideas I’d ask you all to consider.

Think in Three DimensionsThere are three dimensions to consider when choosing activities for your children: their body, brain and social/emotional health. Our children benefit most when we develop their full potential in all three dimensions of learning. This will create a strong foundation for them to thrive in the playground, at school, in their hobbies, relationships, and later, careers.

Body: Their First DimensionUntil the age of eight, research shows that your child’s body is their first, and most important, teacher. Children need to work their arms, legs, trunk, and be active from a young age to fully develop their body, growing brain and all of their senses. Very few activities provide this whole-body opportunity. For example, football is great for eye-foot coordination but lacks upper body development. Research shows that upper body development is essential for everyday skills such as writing, sitting at a desk, and listening. Gymnastics simultaneously works your child’s entire body and puts them in control. Strong legs, arms, trunk, enhanced balance, and body control boosts confidence and helps your child to thrive outside of the gym too.

Social & Emotional Health: Third DimensionOur children are usually surrounded by structure. Structure at school and in very structured activities. Structure everywhere! The last few months have been anything, as we adjust to the “new normal.”It’s important to teach our children order and organisation. But constant structure denies children the opportunity to experiment with their physical capabilities, explore their imaginations, tap their creativity, and achieve balance. Too much structure also undermines children’s developing resourcefulness, adaptability, resilience and problem-solving skills – all critical elements of emotional the intelligence needed for success at school, and in sports, relationships and future careers.  That’s why every class and camp at The Little Gym gives your child an opportunity to explore independently, take risks, progress at their own pace, learn from mistakes, celebrate every success, and have FUN learning with their teachers and peers.

Our commitment to emotional health is borne out by our non-competitive ethos. Sadly, we have seen that not all gymnastics clubs prioritise a child’s wellbeing. Choose non-competitive gymnastics up until 12 years old. Why? The stats speak for themselves: only 30% of kids* remain in competitive sports after 13 years old. Even if in they make it to the Elite Squad, a majority of children will burn out during puberty. The gruelling routine of competitive sports can also result in childhood depression, obesity and lack of self-esteem. Before you chose a club, speak to the teachers and the owners, and if they don’t care about your child as much as you do and the narrative is around national level and whether they will make it in their Elite squad, think again. If you have high aspiration for your child in any competitive sport, the basics should start with unlocking that potential, not judging before coaching. Your child will learn at their own pace, whether be visual, auditory or sensory learning, they will learn. We believe that the key is the teaching quality.

Facilities & Cleanliness: Don’t Compromise! Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we prioritise the standard of facilities we take our children to. That doesn’t just mean nice big facilities, it means dedicated staff that genuinely care about the safety of your children and of your entire family. Cleanliness, hygiene, policies, processes, attitude and habits. It’s that gut feel as soon as you walk into an establishment and look around. Expect premium facilities and cleanliness, and don’t accept anything less. All The Little Gym classes take place in purpose-built centres, used only by our members.  We don’t share our spaces with other activity providers which means that we can be sure who is in the building and when.

Gymnastics: The Foundation for All Sports… and Life!Football, netball, tennis – all wonderful sports, but non-competitive gymnastics, if done the right way, is the one sport that gives your child a springboard for all of them… and the rest of their life too!  Choose carefully and invest wisely.  Take it from someone who knows; as I write this blog, I’m sitting on a BA flight from Mallorca where I dropped my 17 years old son, Luca, to the Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy. He will spend his last year of high school there with the view to bag a scholarship in a US university. Luca started at The Little Gym Hampton and Teddington in 2005. He was two years old then. He acquired all the basics through non-competitive gymnastics and those transferrable skills gave him a head start on his academic and sporting career.

I loved what The Little Gym bought to my son so much that ended up buying into the franchise!  The Little Gym Godalming is delighted to be reopening for classes on 7th September with trials opportunities on 3rd& 4th September. Fantastic experience: The Little Gym at Godalming is such a lovely, friendly, fun and spotlessly clean gymnastics centre for children. Two of our children, our 9 yr old son and 6 yr old daughter, go to Little Gym here. They have a weekly Flips class and we also attend some of the free member classes during the holidays. If we know we are going to miss a class, we can arrange a catch up class in advance. The classes themselves are always fun, thanks to the amazing team of gym leaders. Yet the children quickly learn new and impressive skills over their time there, so much so they want to practice all week in between classes! A very positive aspect to the gym's ethos is that mistakes are okay, and if you can't do something, it's no big deal, just try again (with lots of encouragement and support). Our children have experienced much fun and laughter trying out new moves, no matter how well they do at them initially, and eventually get really good through perseverance which is very much built by the gym leaders' fantastic attitudes and support. Our children's confidence has grown and they are amazed at what they can do now. Clea and her whole team are wonderful, friendly people and it's a real pleasure to bring our children here every week. We relax on the sofas, during classes, with complimentary tea or coffee available for members. We've also attended 2 birthday parties here, which were how we discovered the Little Gym and are so glad we did. A big thank you to the whole team.

Fantastic experience: We’ve been a member of little gym for two years and our daughter has loved it. She has such strength and coordination which we put down to her gym sessions. The Little Gym is also a really high quality facility with excellent staff, it really is worth paying a bit extra for such a brilliant experience.

Positive experience: I can only rate this place from an organised birthday party perspective. Overall the children have fun and it's a memorable birthday party. The couple parties we've been to here this academic year both had organisation blips from Little Gym. For the first one the weekend staff forgot about the event at the allocated time and the party ended up waiting outside for half an hour to be let in. There wasn't a lot of gymnastics participation from staff with the kids and the kids were mainly left to it with the occasional organised group game. I suspect this may have been down to them having to source a skeleton crew in order for the party to go ahead. The second occasion they had to change the time of the party in the week beforehand due to a scheduling mistake. However the second party seemed much better organised with more staff available to the kids and actually engaging them in gymnastics activities. I would still arrange for my daughter to have a party here (as let's be honest the kids don't notice these things) but I would be stressing and hoping for the the best outcome. Some plus points, sofas for parents to relax on and Nespresso pod coffee or tea available for the parents...it does help the party fly by when there's somewhere comfortable to sit and sip!

Fantastic experience: Fantastic place run by an incredible kind, caring and knowledgable team. My 4 year old and 2 year old have just completed their first semester and have both come on leaps and bounds in both gymnastic ability and confidence. The viewing space is fab for siblings not attending the class and for parents the coffee machine is a very welcome addition! We are all looking forward to our second semester with The Little Gym.

Fantastic experience: The little gym has been great. Always a friendly welcome and a bit of a parent haven when it comes to kids activities. Both my girls really enjoy the classes. My eldest is quite shy and would normally take a lot of coaxing to join in anything, but she always looks forwards to gymnastics and it’s so lovely to see them developing physically and socially. The team are lovely and definitely make it enjoyable for everyone.

Fantastic experience: The Little Gym really is an amazing place for children to play and grow - for our little boy we found the classes when he was coming up to a year old and the progression he’s made through fine and gross motor learning, social and emotional play has been special to watch throughout his weekly classes. All the staff are welcoming, funny and adore the children, make the sessions so enjoyable and safe and ensure the parents are engaged in the children’s’ learning too. Wonderful place!

Fantastic experience: We are massive fans of the Little Gym in our house. My daughter has been attending for almost a year and loves her class. The instructors are so interested and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them and they all seem to really enjoy teaching the children. I love the friendly, family atmosphere - everyone talks to each other here! The Little Gym has really brought my daughter out of her shell and her younger sister cannot wait to start in September. Highly, highly recommend!
